YOUTH AQUATICS
From the basics to the back stroke, the Y offers a variety of youth aquatic programs to suit all the needs. Equip your children with the tools they need to be confident in and around water. Through our aquatics programs kids enjoy the healthy benefits of exercise, create new friendships and earn a sense of accomplishments when they learn new skills.
At the Y, we require all swimmers to wear a color coded band, which alerts our lifeguards to their individual level of swimming skill and comfort in the water. To earn a green band and enjoy free reign of the pool, your child can participate in a swim test. Not sure if they’re ready? Check out this helpful video which details the swim testing process:
SWIM LESSONS
The Y offers swim lessons year-round! All lessons (private, semi-private and group) focus on stroke development, personal safety, water sports, games, and rescue. Our program is unique in our child-centered learning approach with an emphasis on building self-esteem, both in and out of the water. YMCA lessons are designed to nurture the whole person– spirit, mind, and body.
Our classes are offered for children as young as six months old, to build confidence and gain comfort in and around water. Find swim lessons here.

SAFETY AROUND WATER
71% OF THE WORLD IS WATER, KIDS ARE 100% CURIOUS
From oceans to lakes to streams to swimming pools, water is everywhere: 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered in it! And while water can be an irresistible place for kids to explore, play and enjoy splashy fun, it can be risky for those who haven’t yet developed their water smarts.
The Y’s Safety Around Water curriculum consists of eight lessons designed to teach kids water safety skills that help reduce the risk of drowning and build their skills and confidence in and around water. A typical session includes:
- Exercises to help kids adjust to being in the water
- Instruction in two skill sets kids can use if they unexpectedly find themselves in the water: Jump, Push, Turn, Grab and Swim, Float Swim.
- Safety topics like what to do if you see someone in the water who needs help
- Fun activities that reinforce skills
