Published 06.10.16

The Golden Isles YMCA presented the 18th Annual Tribute to Women Leaders luncheon on Tuesday, June 7th at Noon at the Jekyll Island Convention Center.  The Annual Tribute to Women Leaders luncheon provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the commitment and dedication of influential women in our community. Proceeds raised from the luncheon directly benefit the youth in our communities. At the Y, everyone has access to programs addressing critical community needs, including full time child care and Summer Day Camp, where children explore, discover and engage all summer long.

Featured speaker, Lu Fendig, a Glynn County native, shared her story of determination and drive as a professional tennis player. She shared successes and defining moments over her 30 year career; a young professional traveling around the world, earning enough points to achieve a  No. 245 world singles ranking. She was one of the first women to receive an athletic scholarship to University of Georgia, is the two-time winner of the The Southern Open 30s and ranked No. 11 nationally in the singles ages 40-45 category. She was inducted into the Glynn County Sports Hall of Fame in 2014, her speech highlighted not only her talent, but her drive to succeed.  “Any dream worth chasing requires hard work,” shared Fendig during her address.

2016 Honorees recognized at the event represent the diverse and thriving Golden Isles community. From educators to artists and attorneys, the 2016 programs paid tribute to the incredible women changing the shape and future of Glynn County. Honorees include: Kimberly Andrews, Jane Asher, Debbie Craig, Debbie Craven, Lynda Dalton-Gallagher, Ann Dempsey, Beverly Floyd-Lewis, Margaret Gant, Angela Heys, Christy Jordan, Maggie Kowalchuk, Patricia Kraft, Tara Kroll, Harriet Langford, Stephanie Marr, Katie Orrel, Orah Reed, Rhonda Thomas, Jean Vernon and Kelly Waldron.

Congratulations to the outstanding honorees for their continued dedication to their community. We also share a special thank you to the 2016 Steering Committee and the Golden Isles YMCA staff for their dedication and efforts to host this tremendous event.
